Hospitality on the Beach 2024 Festival Review

The definition of the word “hospitality” is “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” As Americans traveling to Europe for a drum and bass festival, you would think that we might feel like strangers sailing into uncharted waters, but as soon as we arrived at Hospitality on the Beach, they made us feel a lot more like family. From start to finish – the Hospital Records crew went out of their way to accommodate our needs in a way that is almost unheard of in the US event industry. It might have also been the familiar, soul-stirring music that we know and love, or the temperate climate that is so similar to Southern California– either way: dancing on the beach with so many like-minded individuals made us feel right at home.

The 7-day festival kicked off Tuesday, July 2nd, which allowed the crowd to make their way to the small beach town of Tisno, Croatia from all parts of the globe. The So-Cal crew touched down late Tuesday night, so by midday on Wednesday, we were more than ready to start dancing and hit the beach. The festival venue “The Garden,” is nestled in a small cove just South of Tisno and is home to various events throughout the year. The owners acquired the property in 2012, and it’s truly a hidden utopia outside of the charming, yet antiquated neighboring Croatian towns. Both Tisno and Pirovac were quiet, yet pleasant communities on the water, with narrow, winding one-way streets lined by sleepy marinas, and visited mostly by families with young children or older European couples on holiday. Yet just a few minutes outside of town, a week-long festival full of rowdy ravers and up-front electronic music raged every night until the early hours of the morning.

As we entered The Garden, we made our way down the cobblestone walkway to the Wabi Sabi restaurant, which was open to all festival attendees each day as a place to recharge. The building also provided a central hub for the festival’s operation and production teams. Attendees who stayed on-site could choose from a selection of condo-like apartments, mobile homes, and glamping/tent camping options that were dispersed freely throughout the grounds. The security check getting into the festival was brief, but as we ventured through the festival site, any apprehensive thoughts about safety quickly dissolved. It didn’t take long to realize that Hospitality on the Beach is nothing like the overcrowded (and sometimes unsafe) festivals that we are used to from large promoters in the US.

The relatively modest attendance numbers paired with the smiling, friendly disposition of each person we passed made us feel less like we were entering a private vacation getaway with a couple thousand of our closest friends.
On Wednesday afternoon, The Beach Stage set the tone with a lineup for the soul-loving liquid heads. The dancefloor was poised on a dock directly over the crystal clear, turquoise Adriatic Ocean, and low rock walls along the beach and surrounding the dancefloor created multiple levels for optimum stage-viewing. As the crew laid our towels out on the beach and began to splash in the sea, I was able to catch up with US producer Winslow (KC, Missouri) before his set for a quick chat. “It’s great to be back here in Tisno with the Hospitality crew,” he said, “Last year in Albania, it seemed like a ‘we’ll try it thing,’ kind of decision. Which was fun! But it’s good to be back at this venue.” Being one of the few American artists on the lineup this year– he also mentioned, “It’s great to catch up with everyone because I only get to see the crew on this side of the world like once a year. So, it’s nice to catch up with friends and then also see music from all the legends!” Both Winslow and his long-term partner producer Imo-Lu (Glasgow, UK) smashed their sets at the festival, playing selections of original music signed to Hospital Records. Our crew spent the rest of the night exploring the festival grounds, grabbing our gear from the Hospital merch booth, and dancing at the main Garden Stage: a large, enclosed area with a club-like feel and a sprawling stage, 270-degree LED panel surrounding the dancefloor, and an impressive sound system. Winey and P-Money’s highly anticipated set had the energy at a high for the night, and they played all their heavy-hitting tracks from ‘Sorry I’m Not Sorry’ to ‘6STR’.

Thursday was our first day out on the water, and we hustled back to the festival site to make it onto the Spearhead Records boat party in the early afternoon. The festival had two large cruising boats making multiple trips out to sea each day from Thursday through Sunday showcasing various labels and collectives. The weather was absolutely perfect, and the scenery of the Croatian coastline was breathtaking. There is nothing quite like feeling the gentle tilt of the boat and the ocean breeze on your face while dancing to some of the most iconic artists in our genre. We sipped our cocktails on the bow of the boat and watched the translucent waves slashing by below us– the vibe was immaculate. Before he stepped up to the decks, certified “bestie” of the San Diego drum and bass scene and Spearhead label don BCee found a moment to touch-base: “Very happy to be back at Hospitality again,” he chatted as we cruised along the coastline, “I’ve been a part of this festival since the very beginning. It was great playing on The Beach Stage yesterday and am really looking forward to my set here on the boat.” He went on to promote some exciting news for the label, “There is a brand-new BCee album coming out in October of this year. The first single came out in June and the next releases will be in July, August and September. I’m working with Dilemma on an album as well. This year we will be celebrating 20 years of Spearhead Records, so we’ve got a series of singles coming out next year with some very special guest appearances!” Over the three-hour journey– Riya, LSB, BCee and Stamina MC curated the soundtrack of a beautiful afternoon and made us not want to disembark once we got back to shore. Luckily, we had a few more opportunities over the weekend to hop on board. The DJ Marky & Friends boat was a purely emotional event, with a beautiful moment of tribute to the late MC Conrad just as the sun was setting below the horizon. Fabio’s “Tribe” boat party on Saturday featured a stand-out set by Brighton’s producer Workforce, and though Dillinja couldn’t make his appearance, London Electricity was able to hop between the two separate ships to fill in. After he smashed his set on our boat, he made off into the distance on a private powerboat like James Bond making an epic getaway!

A huge part of our international pilgrimage to Hospitality was to support our fellow US Drum and Bass artists overseas. So, Friday’s Respect LA takeover of the Olive Stage was an important event to rally the troupes for! Celebrating 25 years of drum and bass in Los Angeles, the Respect crew showed up in numbers to demonstrate the expertise of our favorite residents Clutch and Machete. Clutch kicked things off with the sunset vibes as the crowd began to fill in. Starting with some signature liquid selections, he steadily brought up the energy at the stage with PVC on MC duties, closing out with an original drum and bass remix of Labrinth’s “Yeh I Fuckin’ Did It” that hand the dancefloor rockin’. When Machete stepped up to the decks, the crowd’s spirit was infectious. He proceeded to shell out banger after banger while the California junglists saluted with gun fingers and cheered in unison each time Linguistics MC big up’d the crew in the place. Throughout the weekend, Europeans would approach us asking about how the drum and bass scene is doing in America. Instead of mentioning that our scene had only recently been “saved” by the Brits, our go-to response was simply “Watch out– we are catching up to ya’ll!” The rest of Friday night at the festival simply had too many acts to catch every performance, but some amazing sets that followed included The Caracal Project (FR) on the Garden Stage, Camo & Krooked b2b Mefjus, and a last-minute surprise set by the legend himself TC.

The sound stages at The Garden shut off each night around 2:00 AM, which meant that the party crew was shuttled or Uber’d over to the local venue Barbarella’s Discotheque for the after-hours. The beautiful outdoor venue was a short 10-minute trip over to Pirovac, the next town North along the coast from Tisno, and in 2016 was listed at #39 in DJ Mag’s “Top 100 Clubs” issue. Even though the after-hours tickets were not included with a festival pass, each night the venue was packed with Hospitality attendees by 4:00 in the morning. Barbarella’s has two sizeable bars on either side of the dancefloor, which along with their cashless wristband system, resulted in little to no wait time for their reasonably-priced drinks. Even though there was plenty of seating room along the edges of the venue, the dancefloor was swarmed with ravers until the very latest sets of the night. On Thursday night, the lineup was stacked with Flava D, GLXY, and Sub Focus, but the show was stolen by queen Charlie Tee (BBC Radio 1host)– who played an impressive set filled with double and even triple-drops. Her extensive catalog of exclusive tracks was to be expected, but what blew us away was her incredible mixing and perfectly timed switch-ups that had the crowd cheering for more by the time she was finished.

A notable part of the entire Hospitality on the Beach experience was the impressive amount of female-identifying talent showcased throughout the week. Even in 2024, it’s a very rare thing when a festival feels evenly balanced when it comes to gender representation. Though it wasn’t a completely 50/50 split, it was obvious that the women of drum and bass had a strong presence on the main stages, the boat parties, and the after-hours events. Bristol-based producer IVY brought a fresh, young feel to each of her sets: combining her techy, 4×4 style with obvious knowledge of classic Drum and Bass and Jungle genres. Not only are the women of the next generation in drum and bass defining their unique styles– but more importantly– they are also doing their homework! Hospital Records is one of the most prominent international labels that has been actively supporting women in the genre, which is something that many brands (especially here in the US) have yet to do. Summer is never-ending here in San Diego and it’s no secret that our recent Daydream events have been heating up our beloved Drum and Bass community this year! That being said – there is nothing like a proper vacation (or “holiday” as they say across the pond)! For the first time ever, the United By Bass squad is excited to be heading to the coast of Croatia this July for Hospitality On The Beach. We are so excited to spend seven days under the sun, soaking up the sounds of some of the world’s top drum and bass producers against the scenic background of the Adriatic coast. European DnB festivals are truly a whole different style, and we are excited to represent stateside and California junglists on this adventure!

Some background for the newer heads: Hospital Records was founded in 1996 in South London by the legendary London Elektricity. You’ll understand if you were lucky enough to witness his amazing performance at SD Union Daydream in March. (Plus, who could forget that epic b2b2b that closed out the night?) London Elektricity has paved the way for the drum and bass genre in many ways, but the foundation of Hospital Records might be one of his most influential moves. The independent label has signed some of the most influential drum and bass acts in the world including Camo & Krooked, Danny Byrd, S.P.Y, High Contrast, and more. Aside from releasing top-tier tracks, Hospital Records has managed to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of electronic music distribution. In 2023 the label announced their partnership with Believe UK to increase digital distribution of its extensive catalog to a global network of DSPs. Hospital Record’s artist roster spans multiple nationalities and supports the very best in a range of sub-genres of Drum and Bass music.

“Hospitality” was coined as the label’s event brand, which over the past years has grown from London club events to multi-day festivals overseas and takeovers of some of the most iconic venues in the world. Though Hospitality in the Woods in the UK (previously Hospitality in the Park) boasts over 12,000 ravers in attendance – our eyes have been set on the picturesque vision of Hospitality on the Beach for a more intimate, laid-back festival experience!

This July, Hospitality on the Beach returns to its previous home at The Garden in Tisno, Croatia for seven days of non-stop drum and bass! We couldn’t be more excited to dance on the sun-kissed beaches, cruise aboard their daily boat parties on the coast of the Adriatic sea, and experience some mind-blowing performances across the multiple festival stages. This year’s lineup features heavyweights like Sub Focus, Kings of the Rollers, Fred V & Grafix, A.M.C, Dillinja, DJ Hype, Skeptical, Mefjus, and so many more. UBB Recordings is beyond excited to announce it’s 5th release which features a fire pair of tunes from San Diego-based artists Cashcult and Klippee. Coming through with an original House tune that is sure to satisfy your dance floor cravings is one of San Diego’s finest, Cashcult. Following up with with an impressive techy drum and bass remix that takes the original tune to new depths is Seattle-based artist Klippe! Jason Alex, commonly known by his stage name CASHCULT, is an American DJ and musician from San Diego. He began producing music in 2010 as the name Sadies Bens. He produced along side of some of today’s industry leading producers including SNBRN, TJR, Deth Hertz & Mossberg Pump. After signing a deal with Plasmapool Records, his music quickly climbed the charts and his track “I’m Gonna Lick it” sat at the #1 spot for many weeks on the top 10 house tracks on Beatport. 2022 End Of Year Rewind

As UBB resident MC Ridda would say, “Rewiiiiiiiind Selector!” With 2022 coming to an end we wanted to take a chance to look back at all that has transpired at United By Bass and SD Union this year. From the successful launch of United By Bass Recordings to extremely amazing events, 2022 has been quite a year filled with truly memorable experiences. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and relive all that has happened with our 2022 end of year rewind.

United By Bass Recordings Drops Inaugural Release

After almost 20 years of providing top-tier electronic music events in San Diego, California, we decided to take our love for electronic music to the next level in 2022 and successfully launched the long-awaited United By Bass Recordings which would be the newest extension of our passion. With a focus on discovering and delivering innovative and inspiring music from all genres, United By Bass released the ‘War Tapes’ EP by Bristol, UK artist Ben Soundscape to much anticipation. Followed by 3 more releases featuring Dave Owen, Dip Vertigo, and Horge with accompanying remixes by Dela Moon, Mitch Dodge, Ophanim, Cole Vassallo and Reggie Yang, UBB Recordings finished out the year strong and is pressing the gas into 2023 where we’re set to bring it up another notch. Catch the first release of 2023 dropping on January 20th.

SD Union Continues To Bring Quality DNB To San Diego

In its twelfth year running, SD Union, San Diego’s largest Drum N Bass event shows no signs of slowing down and 2022 was another one for the books. With all events near or at capacity, SD Union saw a growth in its attendance and welcomed so many new attendees to Spin Nightclub for shows that featured artists like Bensley, Degs, Delta Heavy, DJ Aphrodite, Echo Brown, Grafix, Lenzman, LTJ Bukem, Mob tactics, Reid Speed, Rene LaVice, T.R.A.C., and Winslow. San Diego continues to show their love for DNB and it’s amazing to see the overwhelmingly positive response to the lineups SD Union is curating.

This year also saw the return of SD Union Day Dream, our signature DNB day party held at The Hole In The Wall which featured a stacked lineup with Bachelors Of Science, Ben Soundscape, Colette warren, Dave Owen, Scott Allen and the San Diego debut of Command Strange. The day was truly special from start to finish and there really is something amazing about dancing to DNB under the San Diego sun with all of your closest friends. We already have plans from multiple Day Dream events in 2023 so keep an eye on our social accounts because they’re going to be even bigger and better than before.

Fore! UBB Is Calling All Crews For A Great Cause!

Combining Art, Food, Golf & Music, The All Crew Classic Charity Golf Tournament returned for its second year to raise money for a great cause. United By Bass’ signature charity event took it to another level in 2022 attracting even more players, attendees, and sponsors which resulted in UBB raising even more funds for Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a charity for children that transforms the lives of disadvantaged infants, children, and teens with physical deformities caused by birth, accidents, abuse, or disease through the gift of reconstructive surgery and related healthcare services, at no cost whatsoever to patients
Attendees enjoyed a day and evening full of golf, activities, and catered dinner all while amazing artists from all over Southern California provide the soundtrack throughout the beautiful Shadowridge clubhouse and course in north county San Diego. When it was all said and done, United By Bass was able to raise over $10,000 with all proceeds going to Fresh Start for the second year in a row.
As United By Bass gears up for the new year, rest asured that the All Crew Classic will be back for a 3rd year in a row and promises to be even bigger and better than years past. Announcements are coming soon so hold tight.

Full Stream Ahead!

During the 2020 pandemic, United By Bass and all other event production companies had to table all in-person events until it was deemed safe enough for us all to return to the local pubs, nightclubs, and festival grounds. With no end to the pandemic in site, UBB transitioned to Twitch where we curated weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly shows that featured artists from around the world. These streams were an amazing release and proved to be a crucial outlet for our team, the artists and our music family from all over the globe. It also was a perfect way for United By Bass to gain new fans which eventually turned into new attendees to our in-person events when they finally returned in 2021.
Even though in-person events had returned we decided to keep running all of our Twitch shows. Our weekly Friday show ‘UBB Stream’ which is curated by Charles Rebellion is now on it’s 130th episode. Closing out the year this Friday, December 30th will be Charless Rebellion with MC Ridda which will be a memorable stream, to say the least.

On January 7th, Timeless Los Angeles will be celebrating it’s 15 year anniversary with a special lineup featuring Hospital Records artist Degs with supporting talent Dip Vertigo b2b Scott Allen, Jen Symmetry, 2B Happy The Jay with MC’s J-tec, Ridda, Slim and Chemistry MC. The anniversary event will take place at the Offbeat Bar in Los Angeles and is sure to be a truly memorable night. Just ahead of the 15 year anniversary, United By Bass had the opportunity to catch up with Jeremy Eichberg aka Dip Vertigo, the man behind the Los Angeles-based Drum N Bass outfit to chat about all things Timeless. What is it like to be celebrating 15 years of Timeless?

“It is truly an unbelievable feeling to reach a milestone like this. It doesn’t happen without an immense amount of support from our loyal following new and old, but we’ve always maintained the same attitude which is, if you continue to come out and support us, we will continue to throw events. That support hasn’t waned, so we’ve continued this journey. There’s been many ups and downs, and moments in the past where PJ and I wanted to throw in the towel, but one of us always gets the itch and picks the other up. I think for both of us, seeing the smiles on people’s faces at our events makes it all worth it. It’s never been about the money. We do it for the love!“

How did Timeless start and where do you see it going?

“Timeless was born out of the next generation of the illustrious, legendary, History making, Grapevinez crew, led by the general, MCMC. We were all artists and promoters for the powerhouse promotion company helping to throw some of the biggest DNB events in all of America. As MCMC moved towards retirement, and simply couldn’t put in what he had before, the OG co-founder of Timeless, Solomon Baldeo aka Neuropunk and I had always talked about curating our own lineups together and throwing a show. In 2007 we got our opportunity and threw the 2 nd to last Grapevinez event ever, called Rize, and it was a complete success. The fulfillment from that event lit a fire in us, and we knew we had to start our own thing. Thus, Timeless was born and the “Each One, Teach One” motto of Grapevinez continued. The two of us would go on as partners keeping Timeless a monthly for 10 straight years at multiple venues while also throwing our massive LA Beatdown events at The Music Box in Hollywood. 2013 saw PJ Yates, Mr. 8:40 himself come in at just the right time. Solo and I didn’t know if we wanted to do it anymore, but he lit that spark again which led to our insane run at The Medusa Lounge. Now, in 2022, we have two new event brands: Our park party, Rays & Vibes, and our day party, Rise n Shine, which have continued to fuel us and give us the momentum we need to bring a headliner like Degs and throw a proper Timeless. It’s taken us a while to find a bar that would be a fit for Timeless and with the
success of Rise n Shine, we’re being given an opportunity to really pack the place in and show what we can do. We love our new home, The Offbeat, and see ourselves continuing to do big things there on the regular but know that it can only hold us for so long. So, the search continues for an even bigger venue to take Timeless, in the words of MCMC, “up another level!”

What have been some of the most memorable Timeless moments

“In our first year in 2008 Twisted Individual played for us at the original home of Timeless, The Little Rock. At the time this was by far our biggest show ever and just about everyone from our SoCal scene was there. This night put Timeless on the map.
Bailey at the Medusa Lounge in 2013 was an absolutely insane night and the place was filled to the rim. The Medusa Lounge allowed us the opportunity to have two areas of sound, and both areas were going off. I remember getting off the decks from my bday set amazed at how full the place was and feeling so much gratitude.
AK1200 & R.A.W at The Complex for our 11-year anniversary was off the hook too and rammed. All the Timeless residents did a wicked set together that I don’t think any of us will ever forget.
A couple other moments that standout, Migat’s debut dnb set at The Little Rock. He had 75 + people for an opening set and I swear you would have thought Andy C was playing. The crowd was going nuts.
Our very first Timeless ever, January 12 th 2008 with Scooba headlining, a 2X4 from myself and Circuit, and a 2X4 from Sound Control with JTec and Ridda, started it all. The rest is history!”

Timeless would have ended a long time ago if it hadn’t been for you.
