musician known as Submorphics

Drum N Bass has been captivating listeners around the world for decades, and within this genre, few artists have been able to carve a niche for themselves quite like Submorphics. Also known as Greg Axelrad, Submorphics is an esteemed figure in the DNB scene. With his unique blend of soulful melodies, intricate production, and a deep understanding of the genre’s roots, he has become a name synonymous with quality and innovation.

With his upcoming performance at SD Union Day Dream in San Diego, CA on Saturday, July 15th, we wanted to catch up with the one and only Submorphics and explore the top five tunes that are currently dominating his playlist. From epic collaborations to emotional journeys, prepare to be immersed in the world of Submorphics and the captivating sounds he has to offer.

1) The North Quarter All Stars - Never

The long-awaited TNQ All Stars ‘Balboa Square’ album is dropping this month and it’s chock full of lush collaborations between labelmates – with some unexpected results. “Never” combines epic cinematic spaghetti western strings with lashing, unique and swingy drums, Detroit techno pads, wobbly bass, reverse guitars and Steo’s inimitable soul vocals. Proud to have been involved in this great project – one for the ages!

2. Submorphics - Cinerama

Not gonna reveal too much about this one — but deeply proud of the emotional journey this takes the listener on.

3. Note ft. aya dia - Vespertine

This will go down as one of the anthems of 2023 from 2 of Manchester’s finest. Detailed production, great chords and a standout vocal from up and comer aya dia. “I can hear the echo in the fire” – goosebumps!

4. Azotix - Without You

When I was in Romania last month, a young producer chatted me up and sent me a folder of forthcoming and unsigned tunes. This one stood out to me with it’s Halogenix-esque production – but with an old skool jungle touch and amazing bassline.

5. Satl feat. Brandy Haze - Today

Anthemic future soul from Poland’s finest Satl and LA’s Brandy Haze. Wonky chords and a melodically-strong modern R&B flex from Brandy make this tune one of the great moments of 2023 and an instant classic.

Submorphics has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the world of Drum N Bass with his exceptional talent and unique approach to music. As we explored his journey and examined the top five tunes currently dominating his playlist, it is evident that Submorphics continues to push boundaries and deliver memorable experiences through his soul-stirring compositions. Whether you’re a devoted DNB enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, immersing yourself in the sounds of Submorphics is an experience that should not be missed.
